The Marjorie G. and Carl W. Stern Book Arts & Special Collections Center of the San Francisco Public Library is honored to present the 41st Anniversary Exhibition of the Hand Bookbinders of California. The exhibition opens Tuesday, June 18 in the Skylight Gallery, and continues through September 6.
This exhibition of handbound books represents the work of professional binders, amateurs and students of the fine art of bookbinding. On view are examples of gold-tooled leather bindings, avant-garde artists’ books, and innovative designs that range from the traditional to the unexpected. Viewers will be delighted by these jewels of bookbinding art.
Unique bindings from the San Francisco studios of mid-twentieth century bookbinders Belle McMurtry, Florence Walter and Leah Wollenberg are special features of the exhibition. These design bindings are drawn from the Library’s Grabhorn Collection on the History of Printing & the Development of the Book.
The San Francisco Bay Area has long been home to an active group of bookbinders who practice their craft within a large community of book artists and calligraphers; membership in the Hand Bookbinders of California includes binders from throughout the United States.
The Hand Bookbinders of California was formed in 1972 in order to create a forum where people practicing and interested in book arts could exchange information and promote their interests. Membership in HBC is open to anyone with an interest in books and bookbinding. Monthly meetings take place from September to June; HBC sponsors workshops and classes in traditional bookbinding, and publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Gold Leaf.
The San Francisco Public Library thanks Signa Houghteling, Rhiannon Alpers, Colleen Curry, and Vanessa Hardy, members of the Hand Bookbinders of California Exhibition Committee, for their enthusiasm and energy in organizing the 41st anniversary exhibition. We celebrate the creative bookbinding art of this dedicated group of artists and hope their work is an inspiration to all.
The public is invited to gallery talks by members of the Hand Bookbinders of California, in the Skylight Gallery, Sixth Floor, on Thursdays at 2:00pm: June 27, July 18, August 1 and 15.
