Calligraphy by Luca Barcellona

Join us for an illustrated lecture on Tuesday, February 5, with Luca Barcellona, calligrapher and graphic designer from Milan, Italy. Barcellona is described as a calligraphic whirlwind who got his start as a graffiti artist, then carried that verve into his study and practice of traditional calligraphy. He has incorporated these skills into a formal calligraphic career, citing influences from Chaz Bojorquez, an international graffiti artist from Los Angeles, to Hermann Zapf, the great twentieth century calligrapher and type designer.

The alphabet is the main ingredient of Barcellona's exciting graphic interpretations. His lettering has been used by companies such as Carhartt, Nike, Sony BMG, and Volvo; his work has also been exhibited in Milan, Australia, and The Netherlands. He recently published an illustrated survey of his work, titled Take Your Pleasure Seriously. Barcellona has his own studio in Milan where he works as a freelance graphic designer and calligrapher.

Luca Barcellona's lecture takes place at 6:30pm in the Koret Auditorium, Lower Level, Main Library. This program is presented by the Book Arts & Special Collections Center in association with the Friends of Calligraphy, and supported by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.

Find out more about the art and practice of calligraphy by visiting the Harrison Collection of Calligraphy & Lettering, in the Book Arts & Special Collections Center.
