Kalligraphia Spotlight: Monica Dengo

Monica Dengo at work

Join us on Saturday, August 11 from 2 – 4 pm for a calligraphy demonstration with Monica Dengo, who will “improvise compositions” in the Latino/Hispanic "A" Meeting Room on the Lower Level of the Main Library.

The Dream
Monica Dengo is an Italian-American artist and designer who was born in Italy and moved to California in 1993 to study manuscript production techniques with Thomas Ingmire and figure drawing with Eleanor Dickinson. She also studied calligraphy and bookbinding at the Roehampton Institute in London.

Shift Into The Poetry of Shape

Dengo has taught in Europe, Japan and the United States. She now lives in Italy, where she teaches calligraphy and experimental handwriting workshops in Venice and Arezzo. She has recently been collaborating with the Istituto Comprensivo di Terranuova Bracciolini (Arezzo) on the teaching of handwriting in elementary schools.

Think
Her book Pick Up Your Pen has recently been published.  Her title page lettering in Recurring Gestures by Tsering Wangmo Dhompa, printed by Tangram Press in 2000, can be found in Special Collections on the 6th floor of the library.

The Body the Dream the Book

Monica Dengo
Join us for this very special event with Monica Dengo. Afterward, don’t miss Kalligraphia 13, an exhibition of modern calligraphy by members of the Friends of Calligraphy, a nonprofit Bay Area organization. It will be on view in the Skylight Gallery on the 6th floor of the Main Library through August 26.
