Upcoming Events - Remember When?

In honor of Older Americans Month, the San Francisco Public Library is presenting programs that encourage us all to "Remember When?" Check out these events that highlight local neighborhood history!

Saturday, May 14 -- 4:00 p.m. Potrero Branch
A Kid's View of Potrero Hill: A Neighborhood History with San Francisco Chronicle Reporter Carl Nolte
Raised on the south side of Potrero Hill, Carl Nolte remembers "all kinds of amazing stuff about the Hill."
"It was a great place to grow up: there were steam trains, billy goats, grass bombs, Russians with long white beards, lumber yards, fleabag movies, the famous summer days when the SFFD set the whole Hill on fire, kite flying contests, cliffs, unpaved streets, even sailing rafts on flooded ponds on the south side of the hill. They had anti-aircraft guns in the park, and the Bay was full of ships. Jeez, you shoulda been there."

Saturday, May 14 -- 4:30 p.m. Visitacion Valley Branch
Remember When: Visitacion Valley Mid-Century ('40s-'60s)
In celebration of Older Americans Month, the authors of the definitive history of Visitacion Valley, "Images of America: San Francisco's Visitacion Valley", will present a photographic tour of one of San Francisco's little-known, but most distinctive areas a half-century ago.  The 20-minute film about Visitacion Valley, "Circle of Elders," will also be shown.

Saturday, May 21 -- 2:00 p.m. Western Addition Branch
Harlem of the West: A Conversation with Lewis Watts
Co-author Lewis Watts talks about the San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Era. He is also preparing a new edition of this book and is looking for local source material -- bring your stories of the neighborhood to this event!
