Cinco de Mayo

Open book with box, Moving Parts Press.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a visit to Book Arts & Special Collections where you can view our copy of Codex Espangliensis: from Columbus to the Border Patrol, an artists' book that explores border culture by contrasting graphic art images from pre-Hispanic times, contemporary Mexico, Western art and contemporary American pop culture.

We own copy number 16 of the 50 copies printed by Moving Parts Press.  It is an accordion-fold structure and reaches 31 feet fully opened.   Guillermo Gómez-Peña , the poet, Enrique Chagoya , the collage artist and Felicia Rice, the book artist and printer, collaborated to make this beautiful and fascinating book.  The book is housed in a box made by Maureen Carey with commentary by Jennifer González.

City Lights has published an affordable trade edition if you want to own this very special item.

Programs you might enjoy at the library include an Annual Open House and Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Mission Branch on May 7th; a Cinco de Mayo Festival at Main on May  6th and stories for children at Ocean View on May 5th.

Enjoy!
