A Dog's Life: San Francisco Kennel Club

The San Francisco History Center joins its 6th floor neighbor, Book Arts and Special Collections, in continuing our April tribute to dogs.

Last month, in honor of Golden Gate Gardening and the vegetable kingdom at large, we featured an 1860 premium schedule from the San Francisco Bay District Agricultural Society. This month, we move to the animal kingdom--specifically, the dog species and its many wondrous varieties--by featuring official catalogs for annual dog shows of the San Francisco Kennel Club. We have a handful of them, along with an official premium list plus one catalog of the Golden Gate Kennel Club,  in our vertical files. Come visit the San Francisco History Center during open hours, to browse through breed descriptions, ratings and prizes, exhibitors, and advertisements for champagne, dog remedies, hats, and hunting supplies from 1900-1912. It'll be almost as if you were there at the shows!

  1. This kennel club sounds like a very prestigious group to be in. It would be great to be able to have my dog be part of something that is bigger than just playing with the kids. Not that he doesn't like that, but there is a lot of sitting around when it comes to the school year. Thank you for sharing. http://www.parklandkennels.com/kennels.html
