Cahill's Canine Unit

Dogs make great cover art, but let's not forget  their less glamorous, more utilitarian roles in our civic life. For example, former San Francisco Chief of Police Thomas Cahill (Chief 1958-1970) started a dog patrol unit in 1962, and the San Francisco History Center happens to be home to Cahill's papers. Amongst them, in a program for the Nineteenth Annual Junior Grand National Livestock Exposition and Horse Show at Cow Palace held April 10-15, 1965, we found the following feature article (click in on the image to get a better look at the names and faces of the dogs):

The Journal of Proceedings of the Board of Supervisors documents the final approval and budget for the dog patrol unit. To view the relevant entries, click on the also online link next to the volume entry for 1962, then type dog in the search box.

We'll send out an all-points bulletin when we have completed processing the Thomas J. Cahill Papers. Stay tuned!
