As you may have noticed, the San Francisco Public Library's Main library is closed today for LovEvolution, the annual electronic dance music parade and festival also known as LoveFest that overtakes the Civic Center.
If, like me, you are one of those library-goers who can't stand crowds and would rather read about Love in the comfort of your own apartment than dance about it in the streets, here's a shortlist of library books with the subject heading Love, all of which can be found in the branch libraries, which are still open today. Besides ostensibly being about Love, these books can also all be found in the San Francisco History Center, in case you want to come read them here, when we're open again.
Let me state up front that none of these is your standard romance genre novel; in fact, the list is a little heavy on the sci-fi. Also, you might want to phone the branch library of your choice and have them do a shelf-check before rushing over to get it. Have your title and call number handy!
- Summer of Love by Lisa Mason. A speculative sci-fi novel wherein a 25th-century teen goes back to the 1967 San Francisco Summer of Love to set the archival record straight. At Bayview.
- So I Married an Axe Murderer, Tri-Star Pictures. Ok, it's a movie, not a book, but who can resist? Apparently, this one is in the San Francisco History Center because the soon-to-be love-struck main character reads his poetry in a San Francisco coffeehouse. At Chinatown, Portola, and Richmond.
- My Dreams Out in the Street by Kim Addonizi. Love triangle on the streets of SF. At too many branches to list. Click the link.
- I Married an Earthling by Alvin Orloff. Publisher's Weekly called it "a cross between Star Trek and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." A queer sci-fi by one of San Francisco's own. At Presidio.
In So I Married and Axe Murderer, I think there's also a scene at the venerable Edinburgh Castle in the TL.
