Bike to Work Day

Thursday May 13 is Bike to Work Day. To inspire you for tomorrow's ride, here are some highlights of the San Francisco History Center's materials on bicycling.

The Great San Francisco Bicycle Protest of 1896 describes a street demonstration of cyclists that predates Critical Mass by generations. For present-day contrast, our poster collection includes a few posters documenting Critical Mass.

You can come and read back issues of the newsletter of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, which in the 1970s was simply called Newsletter, then later became the more whimsical-sounding Tubular Times, before settling upon the now-familiar Tube Times. If you'd like to get more esoteric, read our single issue of Broken Spoke in the Little Magazines Collection in Book Arts & Special Collections department.

Below are some choice cycling shots from the San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection. Here's hoping that your bike to work is as idyllic--happy pedaling!
