Where were you in '89?

Saturday, October 17 marks the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Across the state and throughout the city, a week-long series of special events are happening to connect communities with preparedness. The Library is hosting events this week as part of The Big Rumble. On Thursday, October 15, at 10:15 a.m. participate with millions of Californians for the statewide earthquake drill with the Great California ShakeOut.

To learn more about the Loma Prieta Earthquake, please visit the San Francisco History Center and the Government Information Center to look at documents and books and view videos and hundreds of photographs. Some of the photographs have been digitized and are available to view through the San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection's online database. In February of 1990, the City Archivist collected letters of 1989 Earthquake reminiscences. These are available for reference in the San Francisco History Center.

  2. I was actually in San Diego, trying to watch the World Series. I ended up watching the whole thing unfold on the TV.
