Highlights from the SF History Center: Square & Circle Club

"In deeds be square, in knowledge be all-round."

No, it's not a credo for librarians, it's an old Chinese couplet that inspires the name of what is probably the oldest Chinese women's association in the country, the Square and Circle Club. Founded in 1924 by a handful of Chinese-American teenage girls--charter members Alice Fong (Yu), Ann Lee (Leong), Ivy Lee (Mah), Jennie Lee, Bessie Wong (Shum), Daisy K. Wong, and Daisy L. Wong (Chinn)--the club has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area for 85 years, and it's still going strong.

They've just released a documentary to celebrate their anniversary last June, A Legacy Worth Preserving: The History of the Square and Circle Club. Here is a clip of it:

The documentary can be viewed in full by visiting the San Francisco History Center in person. Want to learn more? Visit the San Francisco History Center and look at the Square and Circle Club records, which chronicle their fundraisers, meetings, and service projects. You can also download and view a pdf of the guide to this archival collection.
